Huskers For Christ – Rex Burkhead

Growing up, I attended church every Sunday. My parents were committed Christians and my grandfather was a pastor. Though I heard the gospel, or good news, about Jesus Christ growing up, it never really made sense to me until I attended a church retreat during my sophomore year in high school. During that retreat, I heard how Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins. I was told that by repenting of the sin in my life and trusting in him as Lord and Savior, I could have eternal life and avoid God’s wrath. After making this commitment, I was baptized in the ocean.
Now, when I think about that sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross, it motivates me to play hard on the football field for His glory. Sports are no longer about my selfish goals and ambitions but rather about bringing Him the glory through my attitudes and actions.
My favorite Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 because it reminds me that no Christian will be successful in anything worthwhile without discipline. It takes discipline and self-control to be the best football player possible on the field and it’s also true for spiritual living as well.
Favorite Verse: 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.”
