Heart of an Athlete

Robbie Trent, Doane College

Robbie Trent recently finished his career as wide receiver at Doane College
at Crete, NE. Trent lettered each year of his career and was named team
captain his senior year. Moreover, he was named a scholar-athlete by his
team's conference three years in a row, as well as qualifying for the
Dean's List.
Trent first became involved in FCA via the huddle on his high school campus
in Arizona. “I saw what kind of impact that made on eternity. So naturally
I was drawn to that, and stepped right in. That passion continued on into
college where I was on the leadership team for four years.”
Having served as president three of those four years, Trent said he “was
blessed to step into a great situation where God had laid the foundation”.
His college huddle had great spiritual leadership from Ken and Tammy
Marvin, the huddle coaches who took him under their wings and discipled him
along with others from his freshman year.
Trent has had the opportunity to serve with FCA at various camps as well as
Weekend of Champions. “Throughout my years with FCA, and especially this summer as an intern, God has challenged me to see that our faith is a continuation on the field.”

Chosen Attribute:  "Followship"

My Definition:  If we are truly going to lead, we need to yield to Christ.

Dictionary Definition:  to follow - "to go, proceed, or come after; to copy after"

Favorite Quotes about Followship:  Some people's spiritual gift is leadership, but the only way we understand leadership is to follow Christ.

Favorite Scripture that Deals with Followship:
Colossians 3:23 - "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." NIV

Why I Chose This Passage:
A lot of people try to lead for themselves, or others around them but Christ is the only one truly worth leading for.

How I Apply Followship to Life:
During my last season at Doane, we went 1-9, as we faced a lot of struggles, it would have been easy for me to just give up, but as I looked to the cross, I saw an example of leadership that did not ever quit.

How I Apply Followship to Sports:
Just like the 1-9 season, there are going to be times when we struggle, and if we try to carry it on our own shoulders, we will fail every time. So the only way to have success in God’s eyes is to be an empty vessel and let Christ lead through us.
